What's on in Adelaide

“Orchestral rock art” featuring human canvases, convoluted comedy from The Bard, a classical salute to spring, resurrected Superjesus – these are just some of the offerings to keep you entertained this weekend.
The Red Paintings
Five-piece orchestral art rock group The Red Paintings (guitar, bass, drums, piano, cello and violin) put out a call for artists and “human canvases” to be part of their Australia tour, so we can only imagine what treats are in store at Saturday night’s show at Fowler’s Live. “As most bands now create social blogs of their tour experiences, The Red Paintings create real-time art works to share the energy of each show with their fan base and tell the history of the band – a fragment of time that fits the moment,’’ says frontman Trash McSweeney. The current tour is supporting their new album, The Revolution Is Never Coming.
The Comedy of Errors
Shakespeare’s convoluted comedy of mistaken identity revolving around two sets of identical twins is being presented in the Dunstan Playhouse in a new co-production by the State Theatre Company of South Australia and Bell Shakespeare. The Comedy of Errors stars Adelaide actor Nathan O’ Keefe (Pinocchio, The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (Abridged)) alongside a cast of other SA and Sydney comic actors, with performances from tonight until July 14 ahead of a six-month tour of 31 cities.
ASO Masters 6
“When Igor Stravinsky’s groundbreaking ballet score ‘The Rite of Spring’ was first performed at the Theatre des Champs-Élysées in Paris 100 years ago, there was an infamous riot in the audience,” says the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra website. We suspect the audience at the ASO Masters concert in the Festival Theatre tonight and tomorrow night (June 28-29) will be a little more controlled, but hopefully no less enthusiastic. The Rite of Spring is the showpiece in a performance being led by French conductor Yan Pascal Tortelier, which will also include Mozart’s “Symphony No 39” and Debussy’s “Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun”.
Adam Hills – Happyism
Who can resist a show called Happyism, especially when it’s being hosted by a genial chap like talk-show host, comedian, and former Spicks and Specks presenter Adam Hills? This is Hills’ first solo show in three years and while Saturday’s gig at the Thebarton Theatre is sold out, you might still be able to score tickets for Sunday. “This guy at the Brisbane show rocked out some Working Class Anthem. What can you South Aussies bring to the table?” he coaxes on his Facebook page.
UnDisclosed: 2nd National Indigenous Art Triennial
There’s just one week left of this exhibition at the Samstag Museum of Art showcasing the work of 20 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists from regional, remote and urban communities. UnDisclosed seeks to provide an overview of the diversity and richness of contemporary Indigenous art practice, featuring painting on canvas and bark, sculpture, weaving, new media, photo-media, print-making and installation work. The gallery is open 11am-5pm, Tuesday-Friday, and 2-5pm on Saturdays.
The Superjesus – The Resurrection Tour
They’re back! After what was intended to be a one-off reunion gig in their hometown earlier this year following a 10-year hiatus, the four-piece band was so overwhelmed by the buzz at The Gov that they decided to set off on a national road tour. Now they’ve come full circle, returning to The Gov for two shows tonight and tomorrow night (June 28-29), where they say fans can expect to hear anthemic songs like “Gravity”, “Shut My Eyes” and “Secret Man” delivered “with even more raw energy than 10 years ago”.
AdYO Maestro Series 2: Britannia
The Adelaide Youth Orchestra is inviting audiences to celebrate the best of British with a concert at Elder Hall on Saturday (June 29) featuring mezzo-soprano Elizabeth Campbell and guest conductor Nicholas Braithwaite. The program includes CV Stanford’s “Irish Rhapsody No 4 – The Fisherman of Lough Neagh and what he saw”, and Elgar’s “Sea Pictures” song cycle and “Pomp & Circumstance March No 2”. Tickets will be available from the venue from one hour prior to the concert’s 6.30pm start.
Confessions of a Romantic
Also at Elder Hall this weekend are Selby & Friends, with pianist Kathryn Selby joined by Finnish musicians Vesa-Matti Leppänen (violin) and Timo-Veikko Valve (cello) for the Confessions of a Romantic tour performance on Sunday (June 29) at 2.30pm. The program includes works by Grieg, Mendelssohn and Brahms.
