The Superjesus resurrected at The Gov

Ten years have gone by since The Superjesus released their 2003 album Rock Music, received multiple ARIA awards, jetted around the globe and then suddenly disappeared. Yet despite their statement at the start of their Resurrection Tour that they had not played together since breaking up, the band (Sarah McLeod on guitar and vocals, Stuart Rudd on bass, Tim Henwood on guitars and Paul Berryman on drums) still perform with all the intensity and fire that made them a hit in the ’90s.

Joking about 10-year flashbacks at their Saturday night gig at The Gov, The Superjesus roared through a substantial back catalogue from three LPs, including “Shudder” and “Stick Together” from Rock Music, “Sandfly” and “Ashes” from Sumo and “Gravity” and “Super Agent Man” from Jet Age.

The mix was very percussion-heavy, with the bass and snare overpowering McLeod’s vocals, but when the handbrake was off and her confidence was at its highest with numbers like “Secret Agent Man”, “Gravity” and “Shut My Eyes”, she cut through and the crowd soared along with her. On several occasions, though, the hum and feedback mushed the music together so it took an avid fan to tell what part of the song they were playing.

At a family party during the day, McLeod’s mum and sister apparently called in to question her “rock moves”, but she need not worry – she still smoulders and struts like the star she is.

After a long and awkward break, the band returned to finish the set with “Second Sun” and “Down Again”. At the end of the night, it seemed McLeod couldn’t believe the Resurrection Tour was over.  As she was almost dragged from the stage, she proclaimed this wasn’t the end and we would definitely be hearing more from The Superjesus. Stay tuned!

The Superjesus played at The Gov on June 28 and 29, supported by Jackson Firebird & The Angels Of Gung-Ho
