This year’s Fleurieu Art Prize festival will include new exhibitions, prizes and activities aimed at both promoting the region and highlighting the issue of water and sustainability.

Entries are open until July 26 for the $60,000 main art prize, with a shortlist of around 120 works to be announced next month. Organisers have announced that a new $5000 Water and Environment Prize will be presented by Flinders University to a South Australian artist.

Fleurieu Art Prize general manager Karen Paris said a “diverse and challenging range of entries” had already been received for the main prize, which will be judged by a panel including Nigel Hurst of London’s Saatchi Gallery.

“This main prize will be supported by innovative new invitational exhibitions and activities, adding real diversity to the program and of course making the most of the region’s spectacular scenery, food and wine,” she said in a statement.

“We also want to draw attention to the critical local issue of water and sustainability and, through the arts, will explore images, ideas and research that are so important to this region at the mouth of the Murray River.”

In addition to the new prize, there will be a day of artist talks, forums and panel discussions about water and sustainability at Goolwa’s Signal Point Gallery, which will also be the venue for a sculpture exhibition inspired by the same themes.

Two other exhibitions – on the central concourse at Adelaide Airport and at Penny’s Hill winery in McLaren Vale – will showcase the work of a range of South Australian artists exploring the idea of “place” within the landscapes of McLaren Vale and the Fleurieu Peninsula.

The Fleurieu Art Prize festival will run from October 26 until November 25, with more information and entry details on the official website.
