From slugs and snails, to the beautiful music of Clare Bowditch and the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra, as well as the humour of the Bard and creativity of SA’s living artists; there’s a whole lot on this weekend in Adelaide.

Science Alive!

Check your heebie jeebies at the door and jump in with the slugs and snails at Science Alive! – the biggest science expo event in Australia which is on at the Adelaide Showgrounds this weekend as part of national Science Week. Learn to tell apart endangered native snails from pests at the Science Alive! booth, which will have specimens of the molluscs, as well as information on where they live and why they make good ecological indicators. There are also chemical shows, “Fact or Fiction” quizzes and Daleks, with the Australian Dalek Builders’ Union allegedly out in force. More information here.

Clare Bowditch

998584_10151737862199280_1137330135_nClare Bowditch (probably still reeling from Patrick’s death) is getting into the spirit of “random creative adventures” and heading out on the road with a new band. Her Winter Secret’s tour takes a “super-talented collaborator (last time it was Lanie Lane, this time it’s new wunder-kind Spender)” and creates a new band, including back-up from the audience – or not. There are still some tickets left, but get in quick or get there early because it’s a sell out every year. Details on Bowditch and other events at The Gov this weekend here.

Rhapsody in Blue

The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra takes to the stage with Chicago pianist Kevin Cole to perform George Gershwin’s classic Rhapsody in Blue plus other favourites in an all-Gershwin concert as part of the master’s series at the Festival Theatre. Cole debuts with the ASO following sold-out performances with Los Angeles Philharmonic, National Symphony and BBC Concert Orchestra. Conducted by Marc Taddei, the program will also feature other Gershwin greats – An American in Paris, Cuban Overture and Piano Concerto in F. Tickets here.

Continuity, Culture and Country

CASM Soul Band, Unknown Remorse, Bec Gollan Trio and Big Sexy star in the second of the Nexus Multicultural Arts Centre and Kurruru Youth Performing Arts’s Aboriginal and Torres Straight Islander music showcase series tomorrow night. The major showcase events feature the talents of local established and emerging ATSI musicians across a range of musical genres. Tickets here.

Living artists

Lighten Up_smallThe South Australian Living Artists Festival continues this week with a myriad of talented local art on show. Check out the full program on the festival site or a few artists we’ve already featured at Magazine Gallery off Hindley Street, and some of the award winners. If you really want to get into the swing of things Marc Bowden has a “fotofind” where you can follow his clues to discover one of five framed prints hidden in the CBD, or follow the Illuminart trail in Port Adelaide to witness the projected art before its gone.

All things Shakespeare

If it seems a little grey this weekend, step into the theatre for some Shakespearian perspective. At the Goodwood Institute, Urban Myth Theatre portrays the murderous journey into madness of Macbeth in a production InDaily’s reviewer describes a “sure to delight”. The University of Adelaide’s Theatre Guild is playing another murder filled tale, this time of Richard III’s ascension to the throne. The “captivating play” enthralled our reviewer, with tickets available here.

I’m Your Man

If the Bard doesn’t give you a buzz, enter the ring for I’m Your Man presented by Vitalstatistix. The production is “physical eye-candy” and once it begins “on stage the pace is energised and “second winds” are both witnessed and welcomed”, says the InDaily reviewer. Tickets to the play, which has just four shows left are available here.
