The pop-up circus is coming to town

A host of zany characters will be dropping in to Hindmarsh Square when The Little Palais comes to town for eight days.

Bamboozled Productions, organiser of the free mini pop-up circus, received a grant of more than $18,000 under Arts SA’s Unexpected City Project to set up in the square from September 28 until October 5.

While it’s timed to coincide with the school holidays, it is hoped the Little Palais entertainers will appeal to those of all ages.

“We’ll have Pandora Pink, who is a 1950s rock-and-roll princess, dressed all in pink,” says organiser Louise Clarke. “She’s cheeky, funny, and a little bit naughty.”

Pandora does a “gentleman juggling” routine which involves of hats, cigar boxes and canes, and is set to an Elvis Presley soundtrack.

World-record-holding juggler Mr Spin, meanwhile, is “a comic vaudeville baseball-bat juggler”.

“His show culminates with him jumping onto a big unicycle and doing lots of crazy tricks,” Clarke says.

Also showing off is the excitable, exuberant Daphne.

Performer Eli Green says the “child-like” Daphne, her alter-ego, will be performing hula-hooping acrobatics. “She encourages the audience to get excited and make lots of noise.”

Green began her circus training at Cirkidz, South Australia’s circus training centre for kids, and students from Cirkidz have been asked to create a show especially for The Little Palais. Clarke says the result is still a secret.

“They’re circus performers with lots of skills, so there is probably going to be acrobatic stuff and flips and flops.”

The entertainment won’t just be restricted to the (little) big top, but will also spill out into the surrounding square. Sam McMahon, also known as “Lucky Sam”, will be outside spruiking the show to passers-by, and says anyone within earshot of the venue will know something is happening.
