ASQ reveals new line-up

The Australian String Quartet says its fresh line-up announced today marks the beginning of a new era for the 28-year-old Adelaide group.
Serbian-born violinist Ioana Tache, a recent graduate of the Australian National Academy of Music, and cellist Sharon Draper, who has played with the Melbourne Symphony and Australian Chamber orchestras, join existing members Kristian Winther (violin) and Stephen King (viola).
The pair had joined the quartet for its recent Debussy tour, and the confirmation of the new line-up comes ahead of its national Beethoven tour, which begins on November 11.
The ASQ, which is based at the Adelaide University Elder Conservatorium of Music, announced earlier in the year that it was undertaking a national search for two new members following the departure of violinist Anne Horton and cellist Rachel Johnston after six seasons.
“It’s great that we could find players with a shared history and common goals for the future,” King said of the new-look quartet.
“We’ve formed a really positive partnership over the past few months, which is an ideal environment for inspiration and creativity.”
Winther said the quartet had a diverse program in store for 2014.

It will undertake its first national season tour of the year in March, with an Adelaide Festival concert the same month called Continuum, which is described as a program of “dynamic sonic adventure spanning three centuries”.
But Adelaide audiences don’t have to wait that long to see the group, with the Beethoven tour coming to Adelaide’s Town Hall this month, on November 20.
