Last Night of the Proms returns for 2013
InReview

It’s that time of year again! The Adelaide Symphony Orchestra brings the spirit of the Proms to Adelaide for two nights of flag-waving, song, and popular classics on Friday 6 and Saturday 7 December in the Festival Theatre.
A British institution and international phenomenon, the Last Night of the Proms is the colourful climax to a spectacular eight week summer season of concerts in London’s Royal Albert Hall and is listened to by millions of people around the world every year.
This year the ASO is joined by conductor by Guy Noble, Scottish tenor and raconteur, Jamie MacDougall and the Adelaide Symphony Chorus as they recreate this great British tradition with classics including William Walton’s Crown Imperial, Parry’s Jerusalem, Elgar’s Pomp and Circumstance March No 1 and Rule Britannia.
MacDougall, who has been the front man for the BBC Last Night of the Proms in the Park for almost a decade, will put his own take on the traditional with Scottish classics, including Loch Lomond.
MacDougall says, “I’ve chosen a range of numbers, a Neapolitan song, something from musical theatre and of course some Scottish songs. They are so international and I’m sure the audience will know them all very well, a chance even to sing along to. That is something I’ll insist on the night – that people join in, it’s that sort of event!”

Of course it wouldn’t be a Last Night of the Proms without Rule Britannia. I recorded that some years back with the Philharmonia Baroque Orchestra, so I’m looking forward to singing this with the full symphony orchestra. I don’t want to give too much away but it will be a Rule Britannia with a difference!
ALSO IN RECITAL – Jamie MacDougall performs a recital with pianist Jamie Cock on Tuesday 3 December, 8pm in Elder Hall. It features Scottish and Welsh folksong arrangements by Haydn together with arrangements of folksongs by Britten, and traditional songs from the Scottish isles by Marjorie Kennedy Fraser.
