What’s on in Adelaide
InReview
There’s certainly plenty of action centred on Adelaide Oval and the Riverbank Precinct this weekend – but the Ashes aren’t the only gig in town. There’s also live music, art, theatre, cinema and even a French Christmas Market. Just remember that if you’re heading to the Festival Centre, parking will be at a premium.
Ashes / Experience Riverbank
Cricket fan or not, you’d have to be living in a bubble not to have noticed a) that the Ashes have come to Adelaide, b) the new Oval is being put to the Test for the first time and c) there’s a whole lot of stuff happening down on the riverbank. Even if you don’t have Ashes tickets, you can still head down to soak up some of the atmosphere at the Riverbank Precinct, with events throughout the weekend including kids’ entertainment and live music by acts such as the Germein Sisters, The Audreys, Latino Grooves, and Mr Goodnight and The Timbers. There’s also food and wine available. The full program is online.
French Christmas Market
Wake up and smell the croissants, Adelaide, this two-day market in the Soldiers Memorial Garden in Unley promises stalls selling wine, cheese and other French foods, plus handcrafts, jazz, carols, and cooking demos by the likes of Duncan Welgemoed from Bistro Dom. It’s on today (Friday) from 5-10pm, and Saturday from 10am-8pm.
Last Night of the Proms
Audience members are being encouraged to “dust off those Union Jacks, grab some streamers, and feel free to wear your best kilt and sporran” for this Scottish take on the Last Night of the Proms. Presented by the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra and featuring Scottish tenor Jamie MacDougall, with conductor Guy Noble at the baton, the program will feature Parry’s “Jerusalem”, Elgar’s “Pomp and Circumstance March No 1” and “Rule Britannia!” There are performances tonight (Friday) and tomorrow night at the Festival Theatre.
The Bamboos
Aussie soul band The Bamboos are playing at The Gov tonight (Friday) as part of their national Fever in the Road tour. Following their 2012 ARIA top-10 album Medicine Man, the group are now working on a new release, with the tour gigs offering a taste of what’s to come plus tracks from the back catalogue.
Arts Bazaar
The Adelaide College of the Arts annual bazaar will feature more than 40 stalls selling handmade jewellery, ceramics, glassware, screen printing, paintings, drawings, paper and fabric crafts by South Australian artists including AC Arts students and graduates. Entry is free and it’s on from 1-8pm today (December 6) at AC Arts in Light Square – there’s also a bar from 4-8pm.
Moonlight Cinema
If you like being scared witless by ghosts or other “dark presences” that lurk in deserted and isolated houses, then you’ll be thrilled to learn that tonight’s Moonlight Cinema flick is The Conjuring – a horror based on the supposed true story of two American “demonologists”. Other somewhat lighter weekend screenings are the Adam Sandler comedy Grown Ups 2 (Saturday) and The Smurfs 2 (Sunday). Gates open at 7pm and screenings start at sundown.
Open-Air Cinema
Meanwhile, at the Open-Air Cinema in Glenelg, you can catch Rush (Friday), the action flick about the rivalry between Formula 1 drivers James Hunt and Niki Lauda, and animated comedy Despicable Me (Saturday). Gates open at 6pm with screenings from 8.30pm. The “Sundae Session” kicks off earlier, at 4pm, with live music following by a screening of the 1980s flick Labyrinth starring David Bowie.
Grug
The pre-schoolers’ pin-up – who bears an uncanny resemblance to a stripey haystack – is back at home on the Adelaide stage after a sell-out tour of the US and Canada. This Windmill Theatre production based on the popular children’s book character incorporates puppetry and live performance with music composed by DJ TR!P and, at 35 minutes, is just the right length for its target audiences. Performances are at the Space Theatre, Adelaide Festival Centre, until December 14.
Improv Unwrapped
Here’s a chance to enjoy an evening of improvised entertainment and spread some Christmas cheer at the same time. Adelaide’s On the Fly improv theatre group is hosting a show at the Bakehouse Theatre on Sunday night, with audience members asked to bring along new, wrapped Christmas gifts which will go under a tree on the stage and then be used by the performers as inspiration for improvised Christmas stories and songs. At the end of the night, the presents will be re-wrapped and donated to the St Vincent de Paul Christmas appeal.
Realms of Wonder
Dedicated exclusively to the art of India, Art Gallery of SA exhibition Realms of Wonder: Jain, Hindu and Islamic Art of India features more than 200 works including paintings, sculptures, decorative arts objects and textiles. There will be a free talk in the Radford Auditorium on Saturday at 2pm by Hare Krishna Temple president Dr Ananda Krishnan about transcendental knowledge (bookings essential). On Sunday at 2pm, Bishop Ian George will conduct a pre-Christmas tour of selected works in the gallery’s collection, accompanied by the Adelaide Corinthian Singers.
