From this Saturday 14 June, the Art Gallery of South Australia will stage two retrospective exhibitions celebrating the life work of two influential, although largely overlooked, Adelaide-born artists.  Dorrit Black: unseen forces and The World of Mortimer Menpes: painter, etcher, raconteur reveal the pioneering role each artist played, albeit in different circles and at different times.

Mortimer Menpes and Dorrit Blackwere both painters and printmakers who shared a common desire to travel the world to develop their careers in art. Although a generation apart they both shared a love of recording the ordinary and natural world.

Dorrit Black: unseen forces is the largest retrospective of the artist’s work. Featuring almost 200 works of art in a range of media including oil paintings, watercolours, linocut prints and drawings the exhibition highlights Black as one of Australia’s leading twentieth century artists who was instrumental in bringing modern art to Australia.

The major exhibition The World of Mortimer Menpes pays tribute to the artistic accomplishments of Mortimer Menpes, South Australia’s first artist to have an international career. Menpes achieved acclaim as a travelartist and portraitist in late nineteenth andearly twentieth century London. This exhibitionbrings the many strands of his practice –paintings, etchings, drawings, ceramics, booksand interior design – together for the first timeand comprises some 250 works drawn frompublic and private collections in Australia,England, Scotland, France and the United States.

Don’t miss all the excitement of the opening weekend including a day long symposium, South Australian artist Brigid Noone’s interpretation of The Studio, daily exhibition tours and more.

Dorrit Black: unseen forces and The World of Mortimer Menpes: painter, etcher, raconteur open tomorrow and run until 7 September at the Art Gallery of South Australia. Find out more about the dedicated events program online at www.artgallery.sa.gov.au
