Aerial performance artists, Joan Armatrading unplugged at The Gov, classic Christmas opera and carols, and an array of festive season markets are among this weekend’s entertainment picks.

Can:Do 4Kids Carols on Colley

Pack a picnic basket, grab a picnic rug, gather a group of friends and family and bring along your best singing voices to the City of Holdfast Bay’s Christmas carols event at Colley Reserve, Glenelg, on Sunday from 6pm to 9pm. The event includes performances by the Tutti Choir, the City of Holdfast Bay Concert Band, soloists from Brighton Secondary School with Glenelg Brass Band, and more. Entry is free, but bring along some small change to buy a candle in support of Can:Do 4 Kids.

Ben Folds Live with the ASO

Singer-songriter-pianist-storyteller Ben Folds joins the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra to perform hits from his career as a solo artist as well as his new Concerto for Piano and Orchestra tonight at the Festival Theatre. Fusing pop music with the power of a full orchestra with Folds’ spontaneity, wit and soul, this one-performance only promises to be an unforgettable experience. More information can be found here.

Welcome Summer Weekend

Laneway The Third is kicking off the season with the Welcome Summer Weekend. Think Hawaiian shirts and alcoholic icy poles tonight and Saturday night, before Sunday’s official launch of Adelaide-based OG Apparel’s new clothing designs in a pop-up shop.

Christmas Uncorked

The National Wine Centre’s final Uncorked event for the year features champagne from G.H. Mumm by the glass, complimentary canapes and oysters and live music, but if you purchase a bottle the sabrage artist will slice off the top in style. The free event will be held today from 4.30pm.

Fashion Icons

This Art Gallery of South Australia spring-summer exhibition showcases glamorous Parisian fashion. Fashion Icons comprises some 90 haute couture garments from the collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, including designs from the late 1940s to the 21st century by the likes of Christian Dior, Gabrielle Chanel, Alexander McQueen, Karl Lagerfeld and Yves Saint Laurent. Fashion Icons: Masterpieces from the Collection of the Musée des Arts Décoratifs, Paris will run until February 15, 2015.

Quasi-Ideal aerial dance

Supported by Finsart Inc and Renew Adelaide, Jo Naumann and Fiona Gardner present aerial dance harness performances – Quasi-Ideal – in a series of shows and workshops until December 12 in the front window of the Suzuki showroom on Waymouth Street. “We draw upon the symbolic representation of our social environment to create an interactive performance with ropes and harnesses,” they say. Visibility from the road will ensure an interesting and spectacular display.

Gilles Street Market Grand Bazaar

On Sunday the Gilles Street Market will explode out of the school grounds and take over part of the street to host its third Christmas event, The Gilles Street Grand Bazaar. As well offering over 140 stalls, including emerging fashion and jewellery designers, preloved designer and vintage goods, homewares, arts and craft and an array of food stalls, the Grand Bazaar will feature artists from the Helpmann Academy sketching and drawing throughout the day, with works available for purchase. The market will be open from 10am to 4pm.

The Mark of Cain

Comprising the brothers John and Kim Scott with Eli Green again behind the drum kit, The Mark of Cain are stopping by The Gov tonight, as part of their first tour since releasing their 2012 album ‘Songs of the Third and Fifth’. The band is sure to play is recently released single, ‘Grey-11’, which features Henry Rollins short spoken word piece. The Mark of Cain will be joined by King of the North for this show.

Luminous World

Showing at Samstag Museum of Art, this exhibition highlights the role light plays in creating and revealing the world around us. The paintings, objects and photographers are from the Wesfarmers Collection and showcase the work of 50 Australian and New Zealand artists, including Bill Henson, Susan Norrie, Fiona Pardington and Nyapanyapa Yunupingu. Luminous World is accompanied by Luminous Cinema, a program of film and moving image works by artists such as Lynette Wallworth. Both exhibitions run until December 5. More information here.

Etypejazz Martini Blue album launch

Etypejazz are launching their 10th album, ‘Martini Blue’, at The Arkaba on Sunday at 5pm, delivering their usual sophistication and sexiness with the energy and spontaneity of a live performance. Wear a touch of blue and prepare to be transported back to the cool lounge feel of the 1960s and join the band in celebration of 20 years and their new album. Fork on the Road with Pictures at Our Port

Fork on the Road is returning to Hart’s Mill in Port Adelaide for the free showing of Casablanca on Saturday between 4pm and 11pm. Featuring all the usual food trucks including Burger Theory, Chimichurri Grill, Cheesy Street and more with beer and cider from Swell Brewing and B Cider. The movie starts once the sun goes down.

Amahl & the Night Visitors

Not since 1958 has Adelaide seen a fully staged production of the classic opera Amahl and the Night Visitors – the enchanting and inspiring fable about the transformative power of love by Gian Menotti that stands alongside Dickens’ A Christmas Carol as a beloved Christmas classic. Exclusively produced and performed by Adelaide artists and showing at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Space Theatre until December 6, Amahl and the Night Visitors will showcase the talents of 12 year olds Finn Green and Aidan Hutson-Hill in the company of some of South Australia’s finest opera singers.

Organic Corner Store Mega Market

A very special guest will be visiting the Organic Corner Store this Saturday at Bellevue Heights Primary School between 9am and 1pm. Stock up on your organic produce and gifts for Christmas. There will also be live music and lots of food stalls. More information is available here.

Joan Armatrading

Part of her last major world tour, Pop, Blues, Folk, Reggae and Jazz artist Joan Armatrading is giving a series of intimate shows nationally and will be performing at The Gov on Sunday. For the first time, Armatrading will perform solo, playing guitar, piano and singing featuring a mix of favourites, including ‘Me, Myself, I’, ‘Love and Affection’, ‘Willow’ and ‘Drop The Pilot’ plus some of her more recent compositions.

Our Mob

The Adelaide Festival Centre’s annual exhibition of Indigenous art features more than 140 artworks by 114 different artists from throughout South Australia ranging in age from just seven to over 80. Our Mob is showing in the centre’s Artspace Gallery until January 25, while an accompanying contemporary art exhibition and showcase of work by young Indigenous artists are in the Festival Centre foyers until December 7.
