Warm up this weekend by getting your boogie on at the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s celebration of disco or indulging in some Winter Reds in the Adelaide Hills.
Other happenings include preview performances of the State Theatre’s Company’s Betrayal, the Scandinavian Film Festival, Italian opera gems at Elder Hall and the Willunga Almond Blossom Festival.
ASO Does Disco
Adelaide Symphony Orchestra is promising an evening of “pure disco gold” at this concert conducted by Guy Noble and featuring soul singer Charmaine Jones (right). Audiences can expect to hear classic disco hits from musicians such as the Bee Gees, Donna Summer, the Jacksons, Village People and Earth, Wind & Fire, with performances tonight (Friday) and tomorrow night at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Festival Theatre. There will also be a post-concert disco on Saturday night at Waves, InterContinental Adelaide.
Scandinavian Film Festival
Screening at Palace Nova Eastend Cinema until July 29, this film festival showcases dramas, comedies and thrillers from Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Finland and Iceland. Films include Icelandic movie Rams, winner of this year’s Un Certain Regard prize at Cannes; domestic drama Underdog (read InDaily review here); Nordic noir mystery The Absent One, and a biopic of actress Ingrid Bergman. See the full program online.
Winter Reds
More than 30 Adelaide Hills wineries are participating in this weekend’s Winter Reds festival. There are ticketed events – such as Howard Vineyard’s Fireside Asian Banquet, Petaluma’s Open House Lunch and The Lane Vineyard’s Museum Degustation – as well as less formal options. Many events include live music: Nepenthe will have acoustic sessions and DJs plus food from Taco Cat and Burger Theory by the fire in its Barrel Shed, while Ngeringa is serving up a “feral feast” alongside its biodynamic wines and music by Jazzy Jones. The full Winter Reds program and map is online.
Operativo – Italian 0pera gems
A quartet of opera singers, supported by pianist Michael Ierace, will present music by composers including Verdi, Puccini, Handel, Mozart and Rossini at this concert of Italian opera gems at Elder Hall on Sunday afternoon. The performance begins at 3pm, with a complimentary aperitivo on arrival. Tickets will be available at the door but bookings can be made here.
Willunga Almond Blossom Festival
Held every year since 1969, the Willunga Almond Blossom Festival runs across Saturday and Sunday with food stalls, markets, rides, sheep shearing, games, farm animals, kids’ activities and more. It’s held at the Willunga Recreation Park and the live music line-up includes Bill Parton, Cool 4 Kids, Ben Ford-Davies and Ripcord.
Betrayal – State Theatre
Harold Pinter’s Betrayal begins after the end of an affair, then proceeds in reverse to reveal how the three central characters – Emma, Robert and Robert’s best friend Jerry – ended up where they are today. It is a play “full of blood, damage and the heavy consequence of impulsive choices”, says director Geordie Brookman. With a cast including Alison Bell (right), Nathan O’Keefe and Mark Saturno, the State Theatre Company of SA is presenting Betrayal at the Dunstan Playhouse until August 15. Preview performances begin tonight. Read InDaily‘s interview with O’Keefe here.

Low Fidelity comprises songs requested by Snarski’s fans and recorded in his home, including Joni Mitchell’s “River”, Lou Reed’s “Satellite of Love” and Paul Simon’s “Bridge Over Troubled Waters”. The Wheatie will also be holding its annual Mid Winter Ball on Saturday, with music by Lucifer’s Lounge and The Baker Suite.

Geoff Wilson: Interrogated Landscape, features more than 70 works recognising the lifetime achievement of the South Australian artist. Both exhibitions continue until September 18.
The Perfectionist – Bakehouse Theatre
Theatre company Adapt Enterprises describes this production as “a play about marriage equality set in the ’70s”.
