Black Diva Power

Ruth Rogers-Wright, who impressed Adelaide Cabaret Festival audiences last year with her portrayal of jazz great Nina Simone, is back with a two-in-one show in which she takes on the roles of both Simone and Billie Holiday. Also featuring a three-piece backing band headed by musical director and pianist Mark Fitzgibbon, Black Diva Power is being presented at Her Majesty’s Theatre tonight (Friday) and the Barossa Convention Centre on Saturday night.

Neil Diamond – Adelaide Entertainment Centre

Grammy winner and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame member Neil Diamond’s world tour lobs at the Adelaide Entertainment Centre on Saturday, and when we last checked there were still some tickets available. The show will feature songs from Diamond’s latest studio album, Melody Road, as well as hits such as “Cherry Cherry”, ”Song Sung Blue”, “You Don’t Bring Me Flowers” and, of course, “Sweet Caroline”.

Clowning Around – ASO

Conductor, musician, magician, clown and juggler Melvin Tix – aka the “clownducter” – will present this entertaining experience which introduces young children to the sounds of an orchestra. There are two 50-minute Clowning Around sessions at the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s Grainger studio in Hindley Street on Saturday at 10am and midday.

Mojo Juju – Jive Bar

After visiting earlier in the year with her band, singer-songwriter Mojo Juju – known for her smooth and sassy blend of blues, R B, soul, and rock ’n’ roll - is back this weekend for an intimate and stripped-back gig with her sibling and collaborator Steven “T-Bone” Ruiz de Luzuriaga (drums/percussion). Saturday’s 18+ gig at Jive Bar will see the duo play material from Juju’s latest album as well as her previous releases, including with The Snake Oil Merchants.

Intimacy – Space Theatre

The beautiful dance-theatre performance presented by Torque Show stars Michelle Ryan, a former top dancer with Australian Dance Theatre and current artistic director of Restless Dance Theatre, who was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis at the peak of her career. Accompanied by a live score by Lavender Vs Rose and also featuring dancer Vincent Crowley, Intimacy is described as a fictional stage for Ryan’s real-life experiences. It’s being presented at the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Space Theatre until October 31. Read review here.

This free community event in Elder Park from 11am-4pm on Saturday celebrates 175 years of the City of Adelaide and will feature live music from ARIA-winning band The Audreys and other local musicians. Eurydice – Foul Play

Described as a “devastatingly lovely exploration of loss, life, and death”, Eurydice, by Sarah Ruhl, presents a new perspective on the Greek myth Orpheus and the Underworld, with the role of the protagonist given to the female character. It is the first of a trilogy of works exploring feminine sexuality which Adelaide’s Foul Play theatre company will be presenting over the next three years. Eurydice (below) is at Plant One in Bowden until November 7.
