Family life marks food and wine art winner

The $10,000 Fleurieu Food + Wine Art Prize was awarded on the weekend to Adelaide artist Fran Callen whose painting was literally a tablecloth and includes all the spills and signs of family life.
In creating Tabletop 1 Callen spread an unstretched canvas over the kitchen table as a tablecloth and sketched objects using pencils and paints during daily routines such as cooking, eating and packing lunches. Any spillages were incorporated into the painting.
Callen, who is a mother of two children, says she embraced this method of painting and drawing as it has allowed her to continue to paint while managing her domestic routine and involve her children.
“There is much more than just paint and pencil on the canvas, you’ll see a few spills of wine, tea, coffee and salt.”

Callen’s work is one of 124 entries into 2016 non-acquisitive painting prize, which was judged by SA artist Chris Orchard, Samstag Museum director Erica Green and Fleurieu Art Prize board member and gallery owner Peter Walker.
The winner and 17 finalists were announced at an official exhibition launch party held at the McLaren Vale & Fleurieu Visitor Centre on Saturday.

“We selected this work as the winner as it really celebrates all that the art prize represents: community art, food and wine of the region,” explains Walker.
“Fran’s work displays a wide range of media and technically is interesting.”
From among the finalists works a Winemakers Choice Award was given to Heather Lorenzon for her painting Luncheon At Star of Greece, Pt Willunga.
More than 120 works from all over Australia were entered into the 2016 Fleurieu Food + Wine Art Prize. All are available for sale and can be viewed at McLaren Vale venues including Angove, Chapel Hill, Kay Brothers, DogRidge, Hugo Wines, Red Poles, Wirra Wirra and Penny’s Hill until July 29.
The Fleurieu Food + Wine Art Prize is part of the Fleurieu Art Prize. The $65,000 Fleurieu Art Prize for Landscape was awarded to indigenous artist Tony Albert last week and is on display at the Samstag Musuem in Adelaide.
