Street-art hotspots around the world

GALLERY: Examples of Adelaide street art sit alongside bold and sometimes provocative murals from all over the world in a new Lonely Planet book.

Published this month and titled simply Street Art, the book presents the art as an intrinsic part of the cultural fabric of urban life and features photos from the streets of 42 cities, including New York, Rome, Paris, Melbourne, Buenos Aires, Christchurch, Istanbul and Johannesburg.
Maps show street-art hotspots, and details are given of key artists and festivals.
“Street art is now present in almost every city, town and village in the world, from Aachen to Zwolle,” Ed Bartlett, who compiled the works, writes in the book’s introduction.
“Its true audience is measured in the billions. And given that the first record of homo sapiens painting on walls is thought to date back around 40,000 years, it’s actually more surprising that street art has taken so long to flourish.”
The chapter devoted to Adelaide says there is a vibrant street-art scene in the inner-city, as well as “an active and technically adept traditional graffiti scene”.
“Morphett Street Bridge is the only ‘free wall’ in the city, and sits just around the corner from the Jive car par – itself a real treasure trove of urban art.”

The book features photographs of street art in Leigh Street, Little Rundle Street and Bank Street, and singles out Port Adelaide – site of the Wonderwalls festival – as one of the places well worth a visit for street-art enthusiasts.
