What’s on: A love story at the opera, ukuleles, dark thrillers

Events and shows over the weekend and week ahead, including State Opera of South Australia’s production The Pearl Fishers, a modern adaptation of Sense and Sensibility, ukulele master Peter Moss and a dark psychological thriller at Holden Street Theatres.
The Pearl Fishers – Adelaide Festival Theatre
State Opera of South Australia will present Georges Bizet’s The Pearl Fishers at the Adelaide Festival Theatre from tomorrow night. The love story centres on two life-long friends who encounter a mysterious priestess during Ceylon’s pearl harvest. The Australian line-up includes baritone Grant Doyle, tenor Andrew Goodwin, bass Pelham Andrews and soprano Desiree Frahn. Performances run through to next Sunday.
Peter Moss – The Gov
English “ukulele master” Peter Moss will present a ukulele workshop and concert at The Governor Hindmarsh this Sunday. Moss has been playing ukulele for 45 years and is stopping in Adelaide as part of his world tour. The workshop starts at 3pm before concert doors open at 6. Ticket bundles are available for purchase online and at the door.
Sense and Sensibility – Dunstan Playhouse
State Theatre Company Ensemble is taking its final bow with Kate Hamill’s “joyful and absurd” adaptation of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. The production, which is described by State Theatre artistic director Geordie Brookman as a celebration of “all the joy that’s to be found in theatre”, features artists on roller-skates and contemporary music from the likes of Queen. Spanish Film Festival – Palace Nova
Guillermo del Toro’s dark fairytale Pan’s Labyrinth will screen on Sunday’s closing night of the Spanish Film Festival at Palace Nova Eastend. The film centres on a young girl who discovers a magical underworld in the aftermath of the Spanish Civil War. Other closing weekend films include comedy The Tribe, Oscar-winning animated family film Coco and Chilean comedy No Filter. See the full line-up here.
GODSPELL – The Parks Theatre
Irregular Productions and Lydian Productions are presenting John Michael Tebelak’s musical theatre performance GODSPELL at The Parks Theatre in Angle Park. The performance, which features music and lyrics by Stephen Schwartz, follows eight disparate individuals who encounter Jesus. Performances run until May 19. Find out more here.
Wolf Lullaby – Holden Street Theatres
Oily rag Theatre is presenting its premier production – Hilary Bell’s Wolf Lullaby – a dark psychological thriller that explores themes including parental responsibility and the “nature versus nature” debate. The play follows the story of nine-year-old Lizzie Gael, who is suspected of murdering a young boy found dead in a children’s playground. Final performances run tonight and tomorrow night at Holden Street Theatres. Purchase tickets here.
Concrete Impermanence – Space Theatre
A trio of dancers will perform Alison Currie’s vision Concrete Impermanence at Space Theatre next Thursday and Friday nights. The performance, presented by Adelaide Festival Centre’s inSPACE program and Insite Arts, is described as an “engaging piece of contemporary dance that reminds us of the inevitable reality of our fragile existence.” The show explores the theme of global and personal instability through sculptural objects, moving landscapes and body as form. Sepultra & Death Angel – The Gov
Brazilian heavy metal group Sepultra and San Francisco thrash band Death Angel have teamed up for an Australian tour, hitting Adelaide’s Governor Hindmarsh hotel on Wednesday. Expect a lot of headbanging, mosh pits and crowdsurfers. Find out more here.
Peking Duk – HQ Complex
Electronic music duo Peking Duk is heading to HQ Complex next Friday night to perform their live set Wasted. The duo is currently touring Australia to celebrate the launch of their new single. Tickets to the event are selling fast.
Gloria! – Elder Hall
Choral group Graduate Singers will honour two giants in Baroque music – Vivaldi and Handel – in a performance at Elder Hall next Saturday night. The choir will perform Vivaldi’s uplifting work Gloria! and Handel’s powerful Dixit Dominus. Tickets available for purchase here.
2018 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art
The Art Gallery of SA, Samstag Museum of Art, Jam Factory and Adelaide Botanic Gardens are hosting exhibitions in this year’s Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. Thirty Australian artists interpret the theme Divided Worlds through photography, painting, sculpture, installation and moving image. The Biennial continues until June 3, with details of associated events here.
