What’s on: ASO wizardry, AC/DC, International Jazz Day

Events and shows over the weekend and week ahead, including Harry Potter in concert, an AC/DC tribute gig, International Jazz Day celebrations, and the final performances of The Wizard of Oz and lonely-hearts comedy After Dinner.
International Jazz Day – Space Theatre
Local jazz musicians Mark Simeon Ferguson and Ross McHenry will perform as part of the Adelaide Festival Centre’s International Jazz Day celebrations on Monday. Ferguson’s performance will focus on female jazz composers and writers, while McHenry will perform a selection of original tunes. Local jazz musicians Alex Taylor, Sam Cagney and Lyndon Gray will perform as the pre-show entertainment, starting at 5.30pm in the Space Theatre foyer. Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Concert – Entertainment Centre
The Harry Potter Film Concert Series has teamed up with the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra to present a live orchestral performance of Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets in Concert tomorrow. The orchestra will perform the entire Chamber of Secrets score live as the film plays on a large, high-definition screen. After Dinner – Dunstan Playhouse

This weekend is the final chance to see this lonely-hearts comedy, which has been re-staged by the State Theatre Company 30 years after it was first produced. Written by SA playwright Andrew Bovell, After Dinner transports audiences back to the pre-Tinder era of the late 1980s, following the story of three women and two men who meet at a pub bistro. Born Yesterday – Goodwood Theatre
Independent Theatre will perform Garson Kanin’s theatre show Born Yesterday at the Goodwood Theatre from tonight. Set immediately after World War II, Born Yesterday tells the story of a shady businessman who descends on Washington to cash in on the wartime scrap-metal trade. The 1946 play is described as a “timeless fable about bullying and the abuse of political power”. Performances run through to Wednesday.
Spanish Film Festival – Palace Nova
Antonio de la Torre stars as a man who becomes hypnotised at a family wedding in the “Almodóvar-esque” ghost comedy Abracadabra, which is screening at the Spanish Film Festival at Palace Nova Eastend tonight. The festival – which also includes Oscar-winning animated family film Coco and Chilean comedy No Filter – continues until May 13, closing with Mexican director Guillermo del Toro’s Oscar-winning dark fairytale Pan’s Labyrinth. The Wizard of Oz – Festival Theatre

There are only a few performances left of The Wizard of Oz at the Festival Theatre. The London Palladium production stars Anthony Warlow, Wicked’s Lucy Durack and Jemma Rix, and Samantha Dodemaide as Dorothy. New songs by Tim Rice and Andrew Lloyd Webber feature alongside classics from the Oscar-winning film score.
A Little Night Music – The Arts Theatre
The G&S Society of SA is presenting a season of Stephen Sondheim’s A Little Night Music, the musical comedy set in 1990 Sweden and centred on the tangled web of affairs of a travelling actress. Performances run until May 5 at The Arts Theatre in Angas Street.
First Fridays – Art Gallery of SA
The Art Gallery continues its monthly Friday evening event series next week with a focus on the Colours of Impressionism exhibition. Visitors will have the opportunity to take guided tours of both the Impressionist paintings from the Musée d’Orsay in Paris – on show in the Elder Wing until July 29 – and the 2018 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art exhibition. DJ Bennymax and French-inspired quirk-folk group Coconut Kids will perform in the Sculpture courtyard, and gallery coordinating curator Tony Magnusson will give a floor talk on the themes surrounding the Colours of Impressionism exhibit at 6pm. Back in Black – The Gov
AC/DC tribute band Back in Black.
AC/DC tribute band Back in Black will perform the iconic AC/DC album Back in Black in its entirety at The Governor Hindmarsh this Saturday night. The band will also perform hits from other AC/DC albums, including “Dirty Deeds”, “Riff Raff”, “Hell Ain’t a Bad Place”, “Thunderstruck” and “Heat Seeker”. Doors open at 7.30pm. Find out more here.
Bowerbird Design Market – Adelaide Showground
Bowerbird Design Market returns to Adelaide Showground’s Wayville Pavilion next weekend with this season’s line-up featuring local designers Kitty Came Home, Namoi Designs and Koush Designs. Miss Lyndal Jay will give a live DJ set next Friday from 4pm. Market attendees will also be able to join flower arranging, relief printed card-making, icing gingerbread and autumn leaf crown workshops, among others. Finds out more here.
2018 Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art
The Art Gallery of SA, Samstag Museum of Art, Jam Factory and Adelaide Botanic Gardens are hosting exhibitions in this year’s Adelaide Biennial of Australian Art. Thirty Australian artists interpret the theme Divided Worlds through photography, painting, sculpture, installation and moving image.
