Disney musical Aladdin set to bedazzle Adelaide

Bedazzling hit musical Aladdin – featuring 337 costumes with almost half a million Swarovski crystals – is set to be the first major Disney Theatrical production presented in Adelaide.
The show, which is based on the 1992 animated film, will play at the Festival Theatre in April 2019, the Adelaide Festival Centre and Disney Theatrical Productions announced today.
“Aladdin is a genuine Broadway smash-hit and securing it for Adelaide is tremendously exciting,” Festival Centre CEO Douglas Gautier said in a statement.
While it is the latest in a number of Disney Theatrical productions – including The Lion King and Mary Poppins – to tour Australia, Aladdin will be the first to come to South Australia.
Gautier implied that recent improvements to the Festival Centre had helped lure the show here, saying the upgrades had secured its place “as an attractive venue”.
The original Aladdin film – telling the story of a street boy who seeks to use a magic lamp to win the heart of a princess – won Oscars for best original score and best original song (“A Whole New World”).
The Broadway version includes songs from the film soundtrack alongside new music. The Australian production is currently playing in Brisbane after seasons in Sydney and Melbourne, where it was generally well received by reviewers who hailed its “technical wizardry” and razzle-dazzle set and costuming.

It features a cast of 34, including Gareth Jacobs as the Genie (voiced by the late Robin Williams in the film), Ainsley Melham as Aladdin and Shubshri Kandiah as Jasmine.
According to the production notes, there are “337 glittering costumes, which feature 1225 different fabrics, 712 different styles of beads and almost 500,000 Swarovski crystals”.
“Forty tonnes of exotic flying scenery and 60 tonnes of automation and staging will be transferred to Adelaide in no fewer than 26 48-foot trucks to recreate the fantasy city of Agrabah including the colourful marketplace, the lush palace of the Sultan and his princess daughter Jasmine and the legendary Cave of Wonders.”
Pre-sale tickets will be available in October.
