Umbrella Winter City Sounds 

Live music festival Umbrella Winter City Sounds is underway, with gigs and events planned at venues across the CBD and suburbs. Head to Bank Street from 5pm tonight for live music, DJs, street vendors, beer, wine and art as part of the opening night party. Coming under the Umbrella umbrella, the Adelaide Festival Centre’s Guitars in Bars will present 220 free and ticketed events, including gigs at venues ranging from city pubs and retail spaces to country halls. Tracey Moffatt and Diane Arbus at the Art Gallery of SA

The Art Gallery of SA is presenting two new works by photographers Tracey Moffatt and Diane Arbus. Moffat’s photographic work Body Remembers and video production Vigil, from her 57^th Venice Biennale exhibition, is described by the artist as a “play with time, backwards and forwards of the past and present”. It comprises a series of 10 sepia-toned black and white photographs which recall Moffatt’s personal and matrilineal history of domestic servitude. Arbus’s work, American Portraits, comprises 36 rare vintage prints captured during the American photographer’s last decade of her life. The exhibition also includes several Arbus photographs uncovered in a private South Australian collection. Both exhibitions open tomorrow and run until September 30.

JOAN

SA theatre company Vitalstatistix has partnered with Melbourne-based THE RABBLE to present the new production JOAN – a “radical homage” to medieval heroine Joan of Arc – at Waterside in Port Adelaide. The play centres on Joan’s teenage years, starting with her plight to convince an army of men that she hears the voice of the divine. It is described as a “fierce, hypnotic and uncompromising theatrical work” that “traverses Joan’s iconography from kneeling silent-cinematic maiden to pious saint, from immolation to rousing immortal orator”. Performances open on Tuesday and continue until July 22.

Swan Lake on Ice

Theatrical ice-skating company The Imperial Ice Stars return to the Adelaide Entertainment Centre Theatre this Wednesday through to July 22 to present Swan Lake on Ice. The cast of 23 former Olympic, world, European and national championship-level skaters will perform choreography from leading ice director Tony Mercer, including acrobatics, flying sequences, aerial gymnastics and a “fire-on-ice” section, set to Tchaikovsky’s score. Last time we checked, tickets were still available.

Scandinavian Film Festival

Under the Tree will screen at the opening of the Scandinavian Film Festival on Wednesday.

Palace Nova Eastend Cinema will screen the best of Nordic cinema as part of the annual Scandinavian Film Fest, starting on Wednesday and continuing until August 5. Wednesday’s opening night comedy-drama Under the Tree (Iceland) tells the story of a 30-something man who temporarily moves back in with his parents after being thrown out of his marital home accused of cheating. Other highlights include comedy A Horrible Woman (Denmark), which explores a dysfunctional relationship between a manipulative girlfriend and a weak-willed boyfriend; superhero drama Thelma (Norway), which follows a student who moves to Oslo and discovers she has supernatural powers, and coming-of-age film What Will People Say (Norway), which explores the cultural tensions in a Pakistani family living in Norway. 

Adelaide Festival of Ideas

This year’s Adelaide Festival of Ideas program features panel discussions and talk sessions dealing with topics as diverse as history, education, social movements, science, sport and culture. Arts talk sessions to look out for this weekend include The art of redemption (Saturday) – Can art be a way to create a positive dialogue characterised by gratitude, support, encouragement and mutual learning?; The art of nature (Sunday) – How do artists respond to humans’ destructive force on nature?, and Images of ageing (Sunday) – How do images of ageing make us feel about ourselves and others?
