Coloured Stone are playing at The Gov tonight and Survival Day in Semaphore on Saturday.

Australia Day

In the City: Following the annual Australia Day parade (beginning at 6pm in Victoria Square), pop duo The Veronicas and Adelaide band The Sundance Kids will headline a free concert in Elder Park from 7pm. The event will conclude with a fireworks display, scheduled to begin at about 9.30pm.

At the Bay: Glenelg will host a free family fun day from 10.30am until 2pm on the foreshore, with live music, “balloon twister”, roving entertainment, giant games and face painting. Details here.

Survival Day at Semaphore: Tandanya National Aboriginal Cultural Institute will host this free event on the Semaphore Foreshore from 11am until 7pm. Celebrating Indigenous culture, it will feature a music line-up including SA rock band Coloured Stone (who are also playing a gig tonight at the Governor Hindmarsh), Yorke Band and Vonda Last. There will also be dance performances, workshops and craft stalls. Details here.

Electric Gardens Festival

Electric Gardens music festival will return to Adelaide this year in a new venue.

International music producers including Paul Van Dyk, Erick Morillo, Eats Everything, Bag Raiders and Set Mo are set to perform at Electric Gardens electronic music festival at the Thebarton Theatre on Sunday. The 18+ event kicks off from 5pm with performances running until midnight. Note the location of the event has changed from Serafino Winery.

Former Genesis drummer and frontman Phil Collins will perform at Adelaide Oval tonight for the Adelaide leg of his Not Dead Yet Australian tour. Collins will be joined on stage by a 14-piece band featuring long-time touring members Daryl Stuermer (guitar), Brad Cole (keyboard), Leland Sklar (bass) and Luis Conte (percussion). The line-up will also feature Collins’ teenage son, Nicolas, who will join the band on drums. Last time we checked, tickets were still available.

Under the Southern Stars Festival

Aussie rock band the Hoodoo Gurus.

Australian rock icons the Hoodoo Gurus will headline Australian rock festival Under the Southern Stars at Hart’s Mill in Port Adelaide tonight. The festival will include indie rock group Eskimo Joe, veteran performers You Am I, alternative rock band The Getaway Plan, local group The Superjesus and Melbourne band British India. Solo performer Scott Darlow will also introduce audiences to his unique blend of guitar and didgeridoo rock music.

John Mawurndjul: I am the old and the new

To celebrate the final days of Tarnanthi feature artist John Mawurndjul’s solo exhibition, I am the old and the new, the Art Gallery of SA is hosting a series of special events this Saturday and Sunday, including guided exhibition tours, a film screening of Kim McKenzie’s documentary Waiting for Harry and a print-making masterclass with Arnhem Land women’s collective Bábbarra Designs. Australian signer-songwriter Mojo Juju will headline the weekend’s live entertainment. Mawurndjul has been celebrated internationally for his meticulously painted rarrk (cross-hatching) technique. I am the old and the new is his first major Australian survey of works and features more than 160 paintings and sculptures.

Van Morrison tribute concert

Jazz musician Vince Jones.

Australian jazz singer Vince Jones will pay tribute to Northern Irish singer-songwriter Van Morrison at a concert at the Festival Theatre on Thursday. Jones will perform works from two of Morrison’s most recognisable albums – Astral Weeks and Moondance. He will be joined on stage by The Astral Orchestra, which will be led by musical director Matt McMahon and will feature support acts including local jazz band The New Cabal and Australian guitarist James Muller.
