South Australia’s new home for arts criticism and journalism will launch on February 17 – just in time for Fringe and the Adelaide Festival.

InReview is an ambitious digital project conceived by Solstice Media, the South Australian-owned publisher of InDaily, in the wake of the closure of The Adelaide Review last year.

Solstice Media editorial director David Washington said InReview will look at the breadth of South Australian arts and culture, beginning with comprehensive and in-depth coverage of the festival season.

“Readers can expect credible and informed previews, reviews, profiles and features, led by a team of professional and experienced writers,” he said.

“This journalism will be funded by philanthropy rather than the traditional media advertising business model, to ensure editorial independence and freedom for critics to review without fear or favour.

“We’re excited about the possibilities of our model for reigniting arts criticism and journalism in the Australian media which has faced enormous and escalating financial challenges this century.”

A lot has happened since Solstice announced the project last year.

We have gained funding support, including from the Judith Neilson Institute for Journalism and Ideas, the Helpmann Academy, Ulrike Klein AO and Tracey Whiting AM.

Solstice has formed a separate organisation to run the project – the Australian Reviewers and Critics Fund – which can receive tax-deductible donations from individuals and organisations.

The fund has employed experienced Adelaide arts administrator Sylvie Huigen as development manager for the project. She will work alongside Washington and Solstice group arts editor Suzie Keen. Huigen was most recently the development executive at State Opera South Australia.
