Sci-fi writer Cory Doctorow joins Writers' Week line-up
Adelaide Festival
Cory Doctorow, science-fiction writer and co-editor of the blog Boing Boing, has been announced as a guest at next year’s Adelaide Writers’ Week – the final event to be presented by current director Laura Kroetsch.
The two announcements were made simultaneously today by the Adelaide Festival, which presents Writers’ Week annually in the Pioneer Women’s Memorial Gardens.
Canadian-born, Los Angeles-based Doctorow is a multi-award-winning author whose books include both fiction and non-fiction, the most recent being Walkaway, a young-adult novel published this year; In Real Life, a young-adult graphic novel created with Jen Wang, and Information Doesn’t Want To Be Free, a business book about creativity in the internet age.
“I am thrilled to announce the inclusion of New York Times best-seller and science fiction writer Cory Doctorow in the Writers’ Week line-up,” Kroetsch said.
“His book Walkaway is a thrilling exploration of the side-effects of automation and rapid technological advancement, providing a critique of surveillance culture.”
Doctorow is also a co-editor of the long-running blog Boing Boing, which is described as “a directory of mostly wonderful things” and features posts spanning everything from politics and science to entertainment and whacky tech gadgets.
He joins previously announced 2018 Adelaide Writers’ Week authors including Barbara Kingsolver (US), AC Grayling and Alexander McCall-Smith (UK), Louise Penny (Canada), and Sophie Laguna, Michelle de Krester and Tim Rogers (Australia).

In revealing that this will be her final Writers’ Week as director, after seven years in the role, Kroetsch described it as “a precious event, one that is utterly unique here in Australia”.
“I look forward to presenting the 2018 Writers’ Week program, as it is full of the discoveries that attract readers and writers to the Pioneer Women’s Memorial Gardens,” she said in a statement.
“I am sad to be leaving, but my devotion to the sharing of ideas will continue.”
Adelaide Festival chair Judy Potter said the Festival Board would begin the process of recruiting a new director towards the end of this year.
The full program for Adelaide Writers’ Week, which will take place from March 3-8, will be announced in January 2018.
