A poem for Black Caviar
Books & Poetry
Black Caviar enthralled a nation with victory after victory while at his McLaren Vale home, writer Philip White shared secrets with another mare.
On form
for Black Caviar, with thanks to Max Allen
I have never seen you
not watched you shred the rest
I live out here
listening to stories of you on the wireless
I talk to Elsie
busted in the hips
too many kids and a car prang
I give her carrots and hay
while the vet bills stack up
she licks Roussanne from my fingers
soft wet secrets from that enormous head
would you send her a signed photograph?
Philip White has been writing poetry since he was five. Later in life, having freaked when he read in Michael Dransfield’s Like this for years: “to be a poet in Australia is the ultimate commitment” he strayed from that one true path to commit writing of other sorts. Wine comes in handy.
