This week’s Poet’s Corner features two poems from Adelaide writer Gareth Roi Jones, who is currently co-editing the Friendly Street Poets Annual Anthology number 38.

Dogs & their Owners

You know how they say
dogs take after their owners
since I’ve had Chester I’ve been told he’s

so
good
gentle
affectionate
friendly
playful
very
friendly
kind
licky
so
cute
handsome
beautiful
very very pretty
distinguished, with the silver through his coat

an old soul
such wise eyes
coat’s so fine & soft
young & old at the same time
serious but still a puppy
bit boisterous
loves cuddles

you know what I say about dogs
if I’m lucky
I’ll take after him.

HoneyAir

Summer’s coming when afternoon clouds glow golden
And air thick with blessing spreads from the west
A swim of bees arrives in liquid haloes, swarming in lava
And I feel so sublimely content I’d blissfully consent
To drowning gently in this barrel of sun-warmed honey.

Gareth Roi Jones is a member of the Adelaide writers’ group “dandylion collective”. His collection “Gunyah Healing” appeared in the 2012 Friendly Street three-author New Poets number 17.

Readers’ original and unpublished poems up to 30 lines can be emailed, with postal address, to poetscorner@solsticemedia.com.au. A poetry book will be awarded to each contributor.
