Jelena Dinic, author of today’s Poet’s Corner poem about the hazy space between consciousness and sleep, is co-editor of the 2014 Friendly Street Poets Anthology 38, The Infinite Dirt.

Sleep Walker

In the first third of night
in sleep’s deep slow wave
before eyes begin to dream
things happen.

We trespass each other’s cycles
catching patterns
turning the room
into a leggo cube.

In your eyes
The Starship Enterprise.
The Death Star and Luke Skywalker
are missing a piece.

Outside, the milky fog
spirals its way up.
The gang of dwarf stars
stretch their arms.

Children walk.
Beneath the haze
Gods
wear black.

On the night’s edge
the universe
lures you out for a play.

Moon mouth awaits
with the glassy jaw
The open-eyed night
is looking for you.

I must stay awake.
I must…
