In this week’s Poet’s Corner, Erica Jolly looks at life’s balances with poems from her commended new book, Making a Stand.

Fleurieu Peninsula

Some seek the key to healing sleep
in your quiet winter green curves.

You seem to invite pillowed rest
for work-worn minds and hearts.

My friend sees lovers’ shapes
moving beneath cloudy sheets.

At the airport

In silhouette
a white-faced heron rests on barbed wire
setting its mark upon the world.

He mocks the heavier form
rising above that fence
hurling itself skyward.

Sharply etched –
at home on this grey day
he’s free.

To avoid thinking about the stock market

See tiny fruit begin to form
on apricot and plum.

Inhale the spring-time perfume
of glowing life in purple fig.

Pick a sweet Meyer lemon
to give zest to a casserole.

Enjoy white buds of Valencia
soon to bring orange blossom.

Take time to watch
mulberry leaves uncurl.
