Dutch writer Herman Koch – author of the bestselling dark psychological thriller “The Dinner” – will be guest at the first Adelaide Writers’ Week out-of-season event this year.

With his latest novel, Dear Mr M, being published in Australia this year, Koch will take part in a one-hour conversation titled “Psychology and Deceit” with Writers’ Week director Laura Kroetsch on May 18 at Elder Hall.

The author, who has a darkly satirical style, is probably best-known for The Dinner, a novel centred on two couples who meet at an Amsterdam restaurant to discuss the terrible things their sons have done. It has been translated into 21 languages and is currently being adapted for a film starring Richard Gere, Steve Coogan, Laura Linney and Chloë Sevigny.

Koch’s last book published in Australia, Summer House with Swimming Pool, also traversed a minefield created by dubious ethics and the powerful pull of familial bonds (read InDaily’s review here).

Adelaide Writers’ Week is held annually in February-March, but it also runs extra events outside the festival season, with last year’s guests including Geraldine Brooks, Louis de Bernières and David Mitchell.
