Dave Callan: A Little Less Conversation 2

This is essentially a one-joke show – thankfully, it’s a cracker. It’s this: a lanky, bearded, hairy, Irish-Australian comedian tries to dance like Beyonce, Michael Jackson and a few dozen others.

Dave Callan, whose droll segments on the ABC’s Good Game are enough to make the show worth watching, is back for his second all-dancing show at the Fringe.

This sequel to last year’s A Little Less Conversation drew a sold-out crowd to the Rhino Room on Saturday night, many returning from 2013 when Callan’s Beyonce impressions made it one of the most popular comedy shows of the Fringe.

This year he’s all limbs and pursed lips as he takes us through an alphabet of mostly pop video dance numbers – from Z to A.

The genius is the line he treads between being, well, only moderately coordinated, while nailing the essence of the dance number and performer. He’s backed up by a couple of seriously good dancers, who often steal the spotlight.

I can’t tell you too much without giving away the best jokes (this year’s edition of the show may or may not include a Miley Cyrus-inspired section).

Callan is a clever comedian (and a generous one – nearly all of the jokes are at his own expense), and I would have preferred a little more conversation. His set-ups were as hilarious as his dancing.

But it’s lots of fun – the audience left in a great mood, possibly to the nearest club to try out their own moves.

Dave Callan is performing at the Rhino Room until February 27.
