Adelaide electronic musicians will be showcased at this month’s Umbrella Winter City Sounds festival with an outdoor pop-up event organisers hope will challenge some preconceptions about the genre.

Electro Live will take place on July 20 in Cinema Place laneway in the East End and be hosted by personalities from the adjacent Fresh 92.7FM radio station.

One of the event’s organisers, Patrick Lang of Futuresounds Adelaide, describes electronic music as “the medium of the moment”.

“There is still a perception today that electronic music is just dance music, bangers or EDM [electronic dance music],” says Lang, adding that he wants to display the deeper elements of the music.

He says the laneway will be transformed into a kind of public lounge room, set up with rugs, heaters and couches.

“It’s trying to evoke an atmosphere that is magical and will be experienced in a space that is not actually created for live music.

“It will be a real feast for the senses.”

Lang says the electronic scene in Adelaide is strong, with four “very exciting” and different acts lined up for Electro Live.

They include Mio, who Lang describes as a duo with a dreamy sound and powerful vocals; Luke Carlino, an artist who works with an acoustic guitar and loop pedals, and Zeequil, whose music is a mix of jazz, world beats and house influences.

The fourth act is Hummingbird – “they are very enchanting and you become in quite a trance when listening to them”.

Futuresounds Adelaide, co-founded by Lang and Tom Gaffney, specialises in putting on shows – including a fortnightly event called Side Chain – featuring Adelaide live electronic music acts.

“It’s about giving lots of different people access [to hear them] and just a place to play,” says Lang.

The Umbrella: Winter City Sounds festival, curated by Music SA, will feature more than 200 live performances in 60 different venues between July 15 and August 7. It will include acts from a wide range of genres, such as hip-hop, folk, pop, heavy metal, rock and world music.

The 18+ Electro Live even will take place in Cinema Place from 7pm on July 20, and is a collaboration between Fresh 92.7, Futuresounds Adelaide, Yewth Magazine, Novatech and the Elephant British Pub.
