Adelaide Cabaret Festival
The Adelaide Cabaret Festival features more than 425 artists in 150 performances, with this weekend’s line-up including The Wharf Revue: Celebrating 15 Years, The Juliet Letters (featuring Zephyr Quartet), Ms Lisa Fischer and Grand Baton, Bridget Everett’s Pound It, the interactive Miss Behave’s Gameshow, The Sammy J Songbook, and Lance Horne’s First Things Last album launch. The Jungle Giants – The Gov
After touring across the world last year, The Jungle Giants are now playing a final run of Australian tour dates on the back of their second LP, Speakerzoid. For the all-ages gig at the Governor Hindmarsh on Saturday, they’ll be joined by The Lulu Raes, Gideon Bensen and Machine Age.
Adelaide Cabaret Fringe
The Cabaret Fringe is serving up a smorgasbord of shows, “ranging from circus to samba, comedy to quizzes, and tributes to titillating tunes”, at venues around Adelaide until June 26. Shows include The Redhead Cabaret, A Case of You – The Music of Joni Mitchell, Candy’s Cabaret Live (with Candy Chambers), Cirque Nocturne, Jess McKerlie’s Gender Spanner, Kurt Phelan’s Phelan Groovy!, Marduk Flamenco’s Vidorra, and The Lotus Eaters: A Chamber Cabaret. AdYO’s Pure Poetry – Town Hall
The Adelaide Youth Orchestras will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Adelaide Town Hall with a Maestro Series concert emulating the official opening night concert held at the venue in 1866. The concert, on Tuesday (June 21), will include Wagner’s Prelude from romantic opera Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg, Tchaikovsky’s Symphony No 2 in C minor (“Little Russian”) and Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No 4 in G major. Tales of a City by the Sea – Bakehouse Theatre
This play exploring the relationship between a Palestinian woman living in a refugee camp in Gaza and an American-born Palestinian doctor and activist is described as “a unique and poetic journey into the lives of ordinary people struggling to find hope and love in areas affected by war and violence”. Gigs at Grainger 2 – Grainger Studio
Titled Tomorrow’s Orchestra Today, the second of the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s series of shows at its Grainger Studio features curator and multi-instrumentalist Adam Page on saxophone and Julian Ferraretto on violin, alongside members of the ASO. The performance – on tonight (June 17) – will feature live looping, improvisation and the Australian premiere of Page’s MOMENTVM Symphony. Details here.
ASO’s Dazzling Prokofiev – Town Hall
Russian pianist Konstantin Shamray (pictured above) teams up with conductor Nicholas Carter to present Prokofiev’s Third Piano Concerto in the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s Master 4 concert. The program will also feature Dukas’s The Sorcerer’s Apprentice, Ross Edwards’ White Ghost Dancing and Stravinsky’s Petrushka [1947]. There are performances on June 24 and 25 at the Adelaide Town Hall.
Makers at the Museum – SA Museum
Textile designer Julie White will host this evening, inspired by the artwork in the Waterhouse Natural Science Art Prize. After a guided tour of the Waterhouse exhibition, which is at the SA Museum until July 31, she will lead participants through a series of creative activities. Fleurieu Art Prize exhibition – Samstag Museum
The “richest landscape art prize in the world” has relocated this year from the Fleurieu Peninsula to the Samstag Museum of Art in the city, where the work of all 58 finalists is on display until July 29. This year’s prize was won by Indigenous artist Tony Albert with a wall installation made from vintage playing cards. The work of finalists in the Fleurieu Food + Wine Art Prize are currently being shown at wineries and other venues in McLaren Vale.
Public Image, Private Lives – Art Gallery of SA
Subtitled Family, Friends and Self in Photography, this free exhibition features intimate portraits from the 19th century to the present by Australian and international artists including Max Dupain and Andy Warhol. They include a heartrending series by Sydney photographer William Yang of a friend with AIDS, and candid images by Carol Jerrems capturing 1970s counterculture. The gallery is also currently showing a collection of works titled Between the Lines: Australian Artists and War.
Goldstein – Wheatsheaf Hotel
Adelaide folk-rock band Goldstein are playing a free gig at the Wheaty next Friday to celebrate their 10th birthday. They’re promising a trip through the past decade with the best material from their five LPs to date, “recounting stories about the good, bad and ugly of life in a local original band as well as unwrapping some new material for their next album”.
