Run annually in every state by the Australian Institute of Professional Photography (AIPP), the awards are peer-judged, with photos assessed on criteria including innovation, content, creativity, technical excellence and impact.

The overall winner in South Australia this year was documentary photographer Kelly Champion, who says the images in her portfolio were all “amazing moments” to which she was privy.

Champion specialises in wedding, family and portrait photography.

“I approach all three with my documentary style,” she says.

“I love to find humour in a situation; I always try and view a scene differently.”

Hilary Hann, whose portfolio of wildlife photos included a an elephant bull in Matusadona National Park, Zimbabwe, was named SA Illustrative Professional Photographer of the Year.

“It was our first morning in the park – a park that I’d chosen because of the number of elephants living there – and about an hour after leaving camp we came across this handsome animal browsing in the scrub,” she says of the elephant picture.

“I accentuated the naturally dry, dusty nature of the park which helped to add to the mood of the image.”

Winner of the family category, Naomi Bubner, submitted a portfolio that included the photo below of Paula and Neil. She writes of the shoot: “It was taken in the clients Paula and Neil’s home, as Neil has cancer and was unable to travel to the studio in Gawler. He was wearing these slippers when I arrived and was asleep sitting on the couch and I really wanted to include them in the photo shoot.”

The gallery below features winners from a range of different categories in the state awards, which can act as a stepping stone to the national AIPP awards.
