What’s on: The spring festivals have sprung

For those not caught up in footy finals fever, there’s still plenty happening over the long weekend (and week) ahead, including OzAsia’s Moon Lantern Festival, Indofest, the Semaphore Music Festival, gigs, plays and movies galore.

OzAsia Festival

The Adelaide Festival Centre’s 2017 OzAsia Festival features more than 300 artists across 50 events spanning theatre, dance, music, visual art and film. Highlights over the weekend and week ahead include the epic play Hotel, spanning 100 years of Singaporean history; vocaloid pop opera The End; collaborative music concert Seoul Meets Arnhem Land: Ecstatic Voice, and Japanese play Dark Inn. The popular Moon Lantern Festival will take place on Sunday (October 1) in Elder Park, while Lucky Dumpling Market on the Riverbank is serving up street food and live music throughout the festival, which runs until October 8. ASO’s In Nature’s Realm – Town Hall

Pinchas Zukerman is conducting the Adelaide Symphony Orchestra’s seventh Master Series concert, which will see guest cellist Amanda Forsyth join the orchestra for performances at the Town Hall tonight (Friday) and Saturday night. The program comprises Elgar’s Sospiri, Dvořák’s Waldesruhe and Symphony No 8, and Mozart’s Violin Concerto No 3.

Semaphore Music Festival

WA alt-country singer Ruby Boots (pictured) headlines a line-up of around 60 music acts performing in pubs, clubs and other venues around Semaphore as part of this four-day music fest which kicks off tonight. Other performers will include the Ukulele Death Squad, Tom West and Todd Sibbin, Charles Jenkins & The Zhivagos, Kelly Menhennett, Conchillia, William Crighton, The Heggarties, The Timbers and The Hushes. Cloud Control / Meg Mac / Eric Steckel – The Gov

Sydney indie-psych-pop trio Cloud Control are playing a gig at the Governor Hindmarsh tonight on the back of the release of new single Zone, the title track from the band’s third album. Singer-songwriter Meg Mac, celebrating the release of her debut long player Low Blows, is performing at The Gov on Sunday night, with blues-rock guitarist Eric Steckel playing on Monday.

Rabbits – Plant 1 Bowden

After selling out an Adelaide Fringe show hosted beside the basement pool of the Treasury Hotel, Steel and Brown return with Rabbits, a work based on writer and performer Emily Steel’s own experience of moving to Australia. The show is playing at Plant 1 until October 14. For tickets and further information, see the State Theatre Company’s website.

Indofest – Victoria Square

This celebration of Indonesian culture will feature live music and dance, cooking demonstrations, workshops in Balinese dance, Javanese toy making and ketupat weaving, food stalls and a kids’ activity trail. Indofest runs from 10am-3pm on Sunday in Victoria Square.

Adelaide International Youth Film Festival – GU Film House

An eclectic mix of national and international films aimed at young people aged from five to 25 will be screened over this four-day festival at GU Film House in Hindley Street. There will also be workshops (including on animation, virtual reality and special-effects make-up); Q&A sessions with directors, actors and other film industry professionals; panel discussions and social events. Men Behaving Badly – Holden Street Theatres

Director Matt Byrne (Matt Byrne Media) is presenting four episodes – Bed, Marriage, Drink and Sofa – from the British sitcom Men Behaving Badly in this stage show at Holden Street Theatres from October 3-21. “Men Behaving Badly came along when political correctness was in full swing and helped swing the pendulum back the other way,” Byrne says of the program, which centred around two London-based, beer-guzzling flatmates. Italian Film Festival – Palace Nova Eastend

It’s the final weekend of the Italian Film Festival at Palace Nova Eastend Cinemas, with screenings including the romantic comedy Let Yourself Go, which won the 2017 Italian Golden Globe for Best Comedy, and director Roberto Benigni’s 1997 Oscar-winning film Life is Beautiful, which will close the festival on Sunday. Adelaide Film Festival

The Adelaide Film Festival opens next Thursday (October 5) with an after-dark Digital Carnivale at the Tonsley Innovation Centre, the centrepiece of which will be a virtual-reality version of Adelaide photographer couple Trent Parke and Narelle Autio‘s moving image work The Summation of Force. The festival, which runs until October 15, will comprise 142 films, including 23 world premieres and 40 Australian premieres. Its home this year is at GU Film House in Hindley Street, with sessions also taking place at the Mercury Cinema and Palace Nova Eastend, and a pop-up festival hub in Port Adelaide. Read more here, and see the full program here.

Hybrid World Adelaide

New technology festival Hybrid Adelaide will take place across five days (October 4 – 8) at the Tonsley Innovation District, with events, talks and exhibitions covering everything from “space and biotech, to gaming and esports; drones and robots; blockchain and cybersecurity; agritech and artificial intelligence”. After Utopia – Samstag Museum

Presented as part of OzAsia, After Utopia: Revisiting the Ideal in Asian Contemporary Art features moving image, installation, painting and sculpture by artists from South-East Asian countries including Singapore, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam. The works – many of which come from the Singapore Art Museum’s permanent collections – are said to “examine humanity’s eternal search for paradise, playing on the gnawing sense that the present and its realities are not enough”. First Fridays – Art Gallery of SA

Fabulous Fashion is the theme of next Friday’s First Fridays after-hours event at the Art Gallery of South Australia. The gallery will welcome the upcoming Adelaide Fashion Festival, with a talk by designer Paul Vasileff and a display of his Paolo Sebastian garments. There will also be refreshments and live music by soul-roots trio The Wanderers. The exhibition Paolo Sebastian X officially opens on October 7.
