Review: The Naked Magicians

Adelaide Fringe

Just how much fun can you have in a tent with two semi-clad men? ★★★★½

If the men happen to be Christopher Wayne and Mike Tyler, too much fun is barely enough.  And yes, they do bare all towards the end of the show.  Not soon enough for some of the more enthusiastic audience members, but it’s hilarious when it happens.

The Naked Magicians is a very slick show.

Wayne and Tyler are both successful, multi-talented performers.  Wayne was the first magician to have his own show on Australian television (More Than Magic) and Tyler is an all-round entertainer and skilled comedy hypnotist.

Their illusions might be standard magic show fare, but they do them brilliantly.  They are masters of misdirection, although that’s probably helped enormously by the amount of flesh being flashed around.

They say, “Good magicians don’t need sleeves and great magicians don’t need pants”, and they prove the point with card tricks, mind reading, and a bit of escapology, too.

The show relies heavily on audience participation.  This is usually hilarious, but on this occasion they did make a couple of unfortunate selections.  Thankfully, the performers’ stagecraft is so polished that they were able to carry on with good humour.  At least it proves the participants are genuine audience members!

Despite the nudity, The Naked Magicians is good, clean fun.  This might be the world’s cheekiest magic show, but you wouldn’t be embarrassed to take your mum.

Wayne and Tyler launched The Naked Magicians at the Adelaide Fringe two years ago and have toured the show extensively since, including a run at last year’s Fringe.  If you haven’t seen it before, do it now.

They’re naked, they’re funny, and it’s magic – what more could you want in a Fringe show?

Four-and-a-half stars

The Naked Magicians play six more shows until February 21 at The Octagon, Gluttony. The show is rated 18+.
