Eighth Harry Potter story on the way
Books & Poetry
Potter fans the world over are rejoicing with the news that a new “script book” – Harry Potter and the Cursed Child Parts I & II – will be released in July this year.
Set 19 years after the last story, with the boy wizard now a married father-of-three and an overworked employee of the Ministry of Magic, it is in fact the script for the first Harry Potter play, set to open in London on July 30.
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is an original story by Harry Potter author JK Rowling, English playwright Jack Thorne and theatre director John Tiffany.
According to notes provided by publisher Little, Brown Book Group, it sees Harry “grappling with a past that refuses to stay where it belongs”, while his youngest son struggles with the weight of his family legacy.
“As past and present fuse ominously, both father and son learn the uncomfortable truth: sometimes darkness comes from unexpected places.”
The publisher said a “special rehearsal edition” of the script book would be published at 10am on July 31 (AEST), the day after the play opens, with a script eBook to be published simultaneously.
“We are so thrilled to be publishing the script of Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” David Shelley, CEO of Little, Brown Book Group, said in a statement.
“JK Rowling and her team have received a huge number of appeals from fans who can’t be in London to see the play and who would like to read the play in book format – and so we are absolutely delighted to be able to make it available for them.”

Despite the fact that the eighth Potter book is actually a script – and a rehearsal version, at that – the announcement has still sparked a flurry of excitement among the series’ legion of fans. It comes nine years after the last book in the series, Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows.
