Poems: Say Love & Lettuce Eat
Books & Poetry
Two poems with synergy make up this week’s Poet’s Corner contribution from Pam Makin.
Say Love
I brought the washing in from the line
it looked like rain
and I’ve moved some things in the carport
so it’s easier now to get in and out
I made coffee
it’s in the kitchen
I found this beautiful feather
leaf
strip of bark
smooth river stone
tiny desiccated bat
and I thought you’d like it
Would you like a ride,
or would you rather walk?
Would you like me to accompany,
or do you want to go alone?
Can I help?
Can I carry?
Can I lift?
I didn’t give up when I wanted to
I carried on when I didn’t think I could
I kept going
because you did
All of these things say
Love.
Lettuce Eat
Cos nestle in pairs. Two chilled hearts
huddle together in polythene prison.
Crisp beauty on show.
Iceberg is for singles. Wrapped,
or delicately shedding outer layers.
Goodness for pocket pets, freely given.
Dark weedy rocket counts down
to dinner. Fires up a dull table.
Peppers chat with unexpected heat.
But spinach babies grow strong
sailor men. Sweet favourite child
of olive oil. Don’t tell Basil.
Pam Makin, originally from Melbourne, lives in South Australia. A marriage celebrant, she also writes poetry and short stories. She was a heat winner and runner-up at Spoken Word SA’s Summer Slam 2019, and is currently compiling a manuscript of poetry, “to get the written as well as the spoken poem out to an audience”. More can be found about Pam at her website here.
Readers’ original and unpublished poems of up to 40 lines can be emailed, with postal address, to poetscorner@solsticemedia.com.au. Submissions should be in the body of the email, not as attachments. A poetry book will be awarded to each accepted contributor.
