Poem: Second Equinox
Books & Poetry
With the spring equinox to be with us, this week’s Poet’s Corner contribution is from Alana Potgieter in South Australia.
Second Equinox
The dark dawn coldly broods
now when the seasons change their mood,
the slow refracted rays of the yet unrisen sun
rim the leaves in carmine and vermillion
hues subdued
Yet the ground trembles with life-force
pushing forth
the sap rising
thundering unheard
in the tree trunks thick with bud
the itch to shed the coats and blankets
in praising of the hallowed light;
no longer to the north
must chilled faces look to seek the warmth
September is the match-point month
where winter vies to keep it’s frigid hold
but spring is ripe and ready
to emerge in green in gold:
The blossoms and the florescent wattle clouds
whose powdery cherub fragrance delights the senses
makes one laugh out loud,
Nature thrums with anticipation
of life bursting across the nation,
Pobble-bonk frogs play banjo in the creek
Rainbow bee-eaters dart from bank to tree
the lusty clustering feather fest
of the New-Holland honeyeaters
as they prepare to nest
And all around hearts arise
to the pleasure of a swifter sunrise.
Living in South Australia, Alana Potgieter is a veterinarian from South Africa who takes immense joy and inspiration from the natural world and feels a deep connection to it. She is most often to be found in the garden that she and her husband have created from the soil up, or reading a book with one of her spoilt kitties on her lap.
Readers’ original and unpublished poems of up to 40 lines can be emailed, with postal address, to poetscorner@solsticemedia.com.au. Submissions should be in the body of the email, not as attachments. A poetry book will be awarded to each accepted contributor.
