COVID and a flight cancellation have disrupted the Adelaide Cabaret Festival opening weekend, with one major show now off the program.

Festival organisers announced a short time ago that all performances of How to Kill Your Husband (and other Handy Household Hints) had been cancelled following a positive COVID-19 case.

The major opening night show, presented by State Opera South Australia, was scheduled to run from tonight through to Sunday at the Dunstan Playhouse.

It was set to be State Opera’s first appearance in the Cabaret Festival and respected Adelaide theatre director Nescha Jelk’s opera directing debut.

In a statement, Adelaide Cabaret Festival executive producer Alex Sinclair thanked audiences for their understanding and support.

“We are so disappointed we cannot proceed with How To Kill Your Husband this weekend due to COVID,” she said.

“Over the next three weekends we hope patrons will enjoy seeing the many fabulous shows and joining in the festivities.”

Tonight’s performance of Davina and The Vagabonds has also been called off, due to a flight cancellation from the United States.

However, the performances scheduled for 8.15pm on Saturday and Sunday at The Famous Spiegeltent will still go ahead.

“While we are disappointed tomorrow night’s show can’t go ahead, we look forward to a cracking start to the festival and welcoming Davina & The Vagabonds to Adelaide Cabaret Festival from Saturday, where they are sure to wow audiences,” Sinclair said.

“We apologise for any inconvenience and look forward to seeing cabaret fans and new audiences joining in the festivities of our favourite winter festival.”

The Cabaret Festival said it would notify all impacted ticketholders, with refunds to be automatically processed.

This weekend’s opening of the Cabaret Festival heralds 12 days of performances under the artistic directorship of iconic Australian singer, songwriter, record producer and actress Tina Arena.

The festival opens tonight and runs until June 25.
