An electric atmosphere is created in the Kevin Crease Studios at Channel 9, with its excellent acoustics and excited audience of expectant family, friends and members of the public. It is opening night of A Sense of Home.

Right before our eyes, the cast lifts and prepares the screen; the sense of camaraderie and respect for the theatrical process is palpable. Live music sets the mood for a series of projected images that come to life, as a young boy steps forward, picks up a microphone and shares his view on the galaxy and outer space. Each cast member then delivers, in a unique way, their own version of “what home is”.

There is something touching about young people delivering a public message, and this ensemble tugs on the heartstrings with its insightful and diverse descriptions of home. “Home is a place I am used to,” says one, the comment lingering in the air with innocence, hope and wonder.

The large screen is used throughout the show to support the dialogue and storytelling that drives home a message of love, safety and acceptance.

True North is Adelaide’s newest youth theatre ensemble, based in the northern suburbs, and is expanding in the competent and creative hands of Alirio Zavarace. A Sense of Home is directed by Zavarace and produced with his wife Juliette and a creative team that includes set and costume designer Kathryn Sproul, lighting designer Dushyant Kumar, and the musical genius of Tyson Olson, Ezra Juanto and Aaron Akeroyd.

As an emerging theatre ensemble, True North not only provides a platform for enthusiastic young people to express their gifts and hone their talents, it cultivates a training ground for budding actors, musicians, writers, visual artists, storytellers, directors, singers, comedians and tech crew. It is obvious these young performers are being guided in the direction of their dreams.

If “memories are what makes a home”, then it stands to reason that A Sense of Home will leave an indelible memory in your heart.

A Sense of Home is playing at the Channel 9 Kevin Crease Studios, Tynte Street, North Adelaide, at 2pm on Sat Feb 22, March 1 & 8.
