WOMADelaide announces first acts for 2018

‘Queen of the sitar’ Anoushka Shankar, Mali desert blues group Tinariwen, US saxophonist Kamasi Washington, and Australian acts The Avalanches and Dan Sultan are among the 18 artists in WOMADelaide’s first line-up announcement for 2018.

Saxophonist, composer and bandleader Kamasi Washington.

Shankar, the daughter of the late Ravi Shankar and half-sister of singer Norah Jones, and is a six-time Grammy Award nominee whose music includes elements of Indian classical, jazz and electronica styles.

She performed at WOMADelaide with Ravi in 2010, while Tinariwen – self-described “poet-guitarists and soul rebels from the Southern Sahara desert” – were last here in 2008.

Making its Australian premiere at the March 9-12 festival in Botanic Park will be Havana Meets Kingston, a project conceived by Australian producer Mista Savona in which established and emerging Cuban and Jamaican musicians came together in Havana over 10 days to record an album of both original songs and covers of classic Cuban material. A 14-piece band will deliver what is described as a “live show where Jamaican bass culture meets Afro-Cuban sounds, head on”.

Other acts announced today include Ghanaian singer Pat Thomas, UK dub producer Adrian Sherwood, and Mexican guitarists guitarists Rodrigo y Gabriela.

English “site artists” Architects of Air will also return with a new giant, inflatable sculpture called Arboria.

WOMADelaide director Ian Scobie said the artists on the first line-up represented “some of the world’s most dynamic musical traditions, all excitingly reinvented and celebrated”.

More acts will be announced over the next two months.
