When you take your kids to the movies, you expect to be entertained but not necessarily challenged. But Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 leaves us with a few things to ponder: Who are the people ruling this planet? How are we actually managing our self-appointed task?

Picking up where the first comedy hit left off, this second instalment sees inventor Flint Lockwood being recognised by the man he has long idolised, Chester V. Flint is asked to join The Live Corp Company, where “the best and brightest inventors in the world create technologies for the betterment of mankind”. Yes, you’re right, it’s a take on Google and Facebook, and quite a funny one for adults.

Through twists and turns, Flint and his gang of loyal friends set out to destroy his most infamous machine, which originally turned water into food and now has started creating food-animal hybrids – “foodimals”. One can only imagine how much fun the writers had coming up with creations such as flamangos and watermelophants.

The four-year old in my lap certainly jumped a few times when the tacodiles roared and the cheespiders filled the screen, but he laughed more at the cute strawberry and Flint’s endearing monkey, Steve.

The animation is lush and intricate, but sometimes shifts a little too fast for viewers to follow. I am not sure that the 3D version is much better than the 2D version, but the story sucks you in so you don’t really notice the glasses after a while. The 10 and seven-year-olds in my test audience were both deeply impressed and kept talking about the film long after it had finished.

Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 is a perfect holiday outing for the entire family.
