Global streaming giant Netflix has unveiled plans to make its first original Australian TV series, a supernatural crime drama set in a Queensland fishing village.

Titled Tidelands, the 10-episode drama focuses on a criminal lawyer who discovers the body of a local fisherman when she returns home to the small coastal town of Orphelin.

As she investigates, the lawyer begins uncovering the town’s secrets including a group of dangerous half-humans called Tidelanders.

It will be produced by Hoodlum Entertainment, which was also responsible for the TV series Secrets & Lies.

“The primeval landscapes of Queensland are a perfect setting to tell the story of betrayal, small town secrets, ancient mythology and, when it comes to family, explore whether blood really is thicker than water,” Tidelands‘ co-creator and co-executive producer Tracey Robertson said.

Production on the series is due to begin in Queensland next year.

While Tidelands is Netflix’s first original Australian series, the streaming service has been involved in several local co-productions including supernatural drama Glitch, as well as children’s shows Kazoops and Beat Bugs.

Netflix executive Erik Barmack said Tidelands would be screened internationally.

“We’re proud these strong Australian storytellers are bringing their vision to the first Australian Netflix original series,” he said.
