Anthem to an older age

I. Point

Introspection comes pre-dawn
still-asleep brain
in regretted regrets
sepia tones the narrative
behind closed lids

later in the wintered silence
wood-smoke lingers
as stay strong a mate will say
as we watch the flames
conversation slow-stopped

not just re past youth
re past life
re what never was
rather overall
for the eternal pace of
the drift on into the years.

II. Counterpoint

The garland of life worn
for the heartbeats
finding joy in the infinite
finding love in the finite

warmth adorning all things
that instead the narrative
is summertime solstice
pleasures of wine and food
shaded by a large elm
children cavorting
willing laughter erupting

all seasons all moments considered
losses and discoveries equally prized
specialness always there if sought
the land of Gaia absorbing all
begging to be savoured
gifting to those who remember.
